IMMUNE TONIC

Astragalus is one of the best herbs in the world for enhancing the protective efforts of the immune system. How does it actually work? Similar to echinacea, astragalus increase the levels of certain immune cells that fight viruses and other microbial intruders. This includes macrophages, which are analogous to a Pac-man that swims around and ears tasty microbes.

Natural killer cells are also activated. These fearless warriors attack and destroy cancer cells and viruses. This is important considering cancer cells develop in our bodies on a daily basis and are kept in check by our immune system.

Astragalus also stimulates the secretion of a powerful antiviral chemical known as interferon, which prevents viruses from replicating. One eye-opening study looked at 28 people over a two month period and their levels of interferon. Compared with controls, those receiving astragalus had a significant increase in the production of interferon. In addition, the interferon levels remained elevated for two months after astragalus supplementation ended.

What I find interesting is that, for many years now, medical researchers have been trying to use synthetic versions of interferon for immune system enhancement. People with diseases like cancer and hepatitis C are commonly given interferon, but many are forced to discontinue using it because it produces so many side effects. I would suggest that it's time for researchers to focus on finding the active constituents in herbs like astralagus that stimulate the production of the body's own natural interferon, instead of trying to artificially duplicate it. More conventional studies using the whole herb would be even better.

In addition, it's been shown that astragalus has a supportive effect on bone marrow, the core of the bones where white blood cells mature. Animal studies have shown that astragalus increases the army of white blood cells that are needed to fight invading microbes.

Finally, astragalus boosts the levels of antibodies in the body. Antibodies bind foreign invaders and signal the immune system to destroy the most common intruders-bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes.

Uses of Astragalus: As a convalescence tonic in recovery from illness, general debility and weakness. Weak immune system and wasting illness; protective of immune cells during chemo or radiation treatments; prevent or moderate colds and flu. Strengthening lung tonic; soothes coughs. Poor appetite. Anemia. Chronic liver maladies.
